This isn't as easy as it seems.You need to think about what car you want. The best for you might be a new car, a nearly-new car, a secondhand car or another option you may not thought of.
If you've got the cash, then there's not a lot that can beat choosing a new car. You can have the one you want, in the colour you want, with all the right bits and pieces fitted and you'll be the first person to drive it. It also likely to safer and more reliable if you make the right choice.
Then there's nearly new cars — almost brand new cars that only have a few miles on the clock, just you won't be the first owner, somebody else will have taken the worst of the depreciation and run it in for you.
Second-hand cars have a lot to recommend them. They'll generally be cheaper to buy and so will have less value to lose but be careful to buy a good one. Also be aware that the older the car is the less well it is likely to protect you if you have a crash.
Buy either a nearly-new car or a second-hand car and you really need to check it out before you buy it so that you don't end up buying one with outstanding finance on it, one that's been previously written off and put back on the road or one that's been cloned.
An alternative is to drive the family car - it could make a lot of sense to drive this for a while and wait until the cost of getting your own car insurance becomes affordable but you need to understand the limitations.
