General description

BMW say that it's nearly all new but how would you know ?

If you can cope with what is effectively a 2-seater then this is a great way to enjoy your motoring.

If buying secondhand, you'll struggle to find one that hasn't been loaded with extras (a usual BMW tactic when launching a new model) so expect to find prices steep.

Entry-level MINI First introdued in July 2009 to offer a sub-£11,000 price point. It's a stripped out MINI One.

All new petrol MINIs are now 1.6s - the 1.4 has been replaced by a low-powered 1.6.

Things to look for when buying one

Lots of happy MINI Drivers.

The BIGGEST speedo in the world.

Owners who have called their Cooper "Tommy".

If buying new, don't spend over the odds on all those tempting options but you might just need a few...... especially some alloys if you go for MINI First or One, as they come with steel wheels and terrible wheel-trims.

The good bits

It's even more fun to drive than the last one.

The diesel is even more economical now that it has clever 'Stop/Start' engine technology fitted but it won't actually deliver the 67mpg in real-life that it gets in the official tests.

Depreciation is likely to be class-leading again.

The not so good bits

Unless they look at your number plate nobody will know that you're driving a new one, as it looks just like the old one.

It'll be expensive on the insurance as the 1.6 litre petrol-engined MINI is in insurance group 5 (in the old 20 group system) and the diesel-engined Cooper is in group 8!

You still can't get much in the boot.
